Sport at St Matthews Catholic Primary School
Here at St Matthew’s we have a passion for sport and enjoy participating in it.
Pupils are given lots of opportunities to learn new skills and practise those we already know.
As well as participating in the recommended 2 hours of weekly core PE, our pupils are also given opportunities to be coached in sports by specialist coaches and to join lunch time and after school sports clubs.
We always take into consideration the school games values whenever we participate in sport; these are:
Honesty, Respect, Passion, Determination, Team Work and Self Belief!
Inclusion in Sport
At St Matthew’s we believe in every individual having the opportunity to be involved in sport, regardless of disability or impairment.
We use high quality teaching and modified PE lessons, to ensure that every pupil is included.
Through this we encourage independent learning, learner responsibility and peer support, which in turn promotes independence, creativity and leadership skills.
When planning for inclusion in sport, we very carefully consider each child’s individual needs and abilities and always plan sport with the sport inclusion spectrum in mind.
Examples of inclusive sports that we offer are; boccia and goal ball, as well as modifying sports like football to suit learners needs.
Purpose of study
A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
are physically active for sustained periods of time
engage in competitive sports and activities
lead healthy, active lives.
