Year 2 at St Matthew’s Catholic Primary School
A very warm welcome to Year 2. We hope your child’s year with us will be a happy, positive and rewarding time of learning and achievement. Outlined is our Autumn Term curriculum and some important information to make sure life in Year 2 is successful and to build on our strong communication links with parents. If you have any suggestions, comments or concerns please send us a message via ClassDojo or make an appointment via the School office.
Homework
Homework is given out on Fridays. It is due on the following Friday.
Homework tasks will be a mixture of English or Maths and/or topic work. Spellings are given Friday for a test the following Friday. The spellings given out for homework cover the spelling patterns and high-frequency words that children in Year 2 are required to know and understand. Children are challenged further in school with different spellings appropriate to their ability.
Read all about it!
The children are encouraged to change their reading books themselves in Year 2. Please ensure your child’s book bag and reading diary are sent to school every day. New reading books will be given out on Monday’s and collected every Friday. We would like to reinforce the importance of hearing your children read as often as possible. Please write a comment in your child’s white reading record/diary when you have heard your child read. Reading diaries are monitored weekly by the class teacher to keep on track of reading at home. In addition, your child’s teacher will use the diary to comment on reading progress at school. Specific reading challenges may be set from time to time to raise the profile of reading at home and to complement reading at school. Details of these will be sent as and when they are set.
PE Kits
During the autumn term, Year 2 children will have PE every Friday and will take place on the field or the yard. Please send your child into school dressed in an outdoor PE kit.
