Work In Progress – AR – 15/06/2017
Welcome to Reception at St Matthews.
Staff in reception are Mrs Hatherley and Mrs Hunter.
The Reception Curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Nursery.
Learning through play continues to be an important part of the school day, and children are gradually eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners.
At St Matthews we pride ourselves on developing children’s reading skills at an early age. We foster a love of books and enjoy reading daily with our pupils.
In Reception, we use Read Write Inc to teach phonics. Our pupils begin to recognise series of High Frequency Words, many of which cannot be spelled out phonetically. Children start having weekly spellings sent home as part of our Read Write Inc programme? Reception staff work alongside our pupils to promote the transference of reading skills to writing skills.
In Mathematics activities, children learn to count, sort, match, make patterns and record numbers. Our pupils learn through stories, songs, games and imaginative play. Plan Do Review plays a huge part in developing our children as independent learners
There is no set homework in Reception at the beginning, however, the children are encouraged to read regularly, learn the sound and name of the letters of the alphabet, experiment with writing and be involved in counting activities on a daily basis.
Sometimes the children are involved in a particular project or rehearse for an assembly; they might therefore have a few words to learn or may be required to bring something relevant in to school.
After the October half-term, pupils begin to take home set homework.
Don’t forget our 5 minute recap at the end of the day for the next week.
